Troops at Operation Breakthrough – Serving Girls in the Urban Core
“Badges mean nothing in themselves, but they mark a certain achievement and they are a link between the rich and the poor. For when one girl sees a badge on a sister Scout's arm, if that girl has won the same badge, it at once awakens an interest and sympathy between them.” –Juliette Gordon Low
Few things were more important to the founder of Girl Scouts than the idea that every girl could be a Girl Scout if she wanted to. Today, GSKSMO continues that tradition by ensuring that girls of all races, religions and socioeconomic groups can become Girl Scouts. As part of this mission, the Outreach Program was developed to help girls in the urban core fulfill their Girl Scouting dreams. One of the awesome Community Partners that, together with support from donors and members of Daisy’s Circle, makes this possible is Operation Breakthrough. This organization currently supports 55 young ladies from the urban core who are now proud Girl Scouts.
Dreaming big is a major focus for girls in the urban core. According to Tyler Baker, a coordinator for the school “Girls from the urban core have expressed that they want to be sharing their dreams and aspirations and have a feeling of community, Girl Scouts is that vehicle.” Thanks to Daisy’s Circle supporters, these girls working on the Agent of Change Journey that explores their personal talents and female leaders who made a difference. Alesia, one of the Junior Girl Scouts, wrote “first female African American Supreme Court Justice” on her nametag when they were doing an activity to envision future career goals. How inspiring – and Daisy’s Circle members make it possible!!
Junior Girl Scouts learn to use their voices, Daisy Girl Scouts learn about animal care and Brownie Girl Scouts just received new vests and badges to proudly show the world their successes – all of this because of Community Partners and donors, like you! You’ll have to read more about the troops at Operation Breakthrough and even see a video on our blog (www.gsksmoblog.org)! Thanks to Daisy’s Circle, these girls will never have to dream about being Girl Scouts – they ARE Girl Scouts. This is the real difference being a member of Daisy’s Circle makes every day in the 47 counties in our council.
Thank you to all the Daisy’s Circle members who make this possible. If you haven’t joined, click the Join button on the home page to get started.
